European added value

Our project will give kids of different nationalities a chance to know and compare different cultures. Becoming aware of our own cultural identity makes us understand ourselves better and as a result makes us become closer to the rest of the world and have a better understanding and appreciation of their identity.
All the activities in the project will not only benefit the pupils and enrich the teaching skills of staff, but will promote the European dimension. It is planned to have maximum impact through cultural interaction and its emphasis on collaboration is not only likely to motivate staff towards effecting such changes in their organizations, but it also provide encouragement for organisations to engage in more ambitious educational projects in future under other Comenius actions.

The project will address the following European added value elements:

- Relationship building for both the participating organisations and staff.
- Multicultural cooperation of staff and learners.
- Strengthening of the organisation experience to the EU environment.
- Mobility of staff to empower the possibilities of European learning and working cooperation.
- Improved communicative skills (English) for teachers and learners.
-Development of sense of belonging to the European Continent and increase knowledge of it..

Small steps made by pupils in some European countries, will lead for sure to a better future and a more tolerant continent.
Participating in this project with schools from different countries will allow pupils and teachers practice a foreign language and increase their motivation towards other European languages learning.
Partners students will act as a mean to make families more open -minded and aware of their European citizenship, as well as getting them more involved in our schools life.

Project Objectives and Strategy

The objectives of the partnership will be:

-To develop the curriculum in terms of its content and its underlying values.

-To contribute to the professional development of staff through contact with other education systems and networking with other teachers.
- An European ethos embedded throughout the school.
- To achieve a greater understanding of other countries and their cultures.
- To teach relevant skills in young pupils through easy , lively and interactive activities.
- To improve teachers´work by learning from practice in other countries

We intend to address the folllowing:

-How learning and teaching can be made to be enjoyable, motivating and stimulating for kids and teachers.
-How to improve the quality of early learning in a range of subjects.
-How to increase the cultural understanding about other European countries.
-How to practice the English language in a natural way.
-How to develop the key competences in young children.

To achieve our objectives we will adopt a set of realistic and concrete activities based on the principal of cooperative approach.
In the first year of WAKE UP project, the children will learn about partners schools and countries. They will construct a big map of Europe using different techniques (salt, collage.); they will locate the partners countries on the map and stick flags of the countries and names of the partners schools. They will search for famous landmarks and interesting facts of those countries, communicate with skype and share video presentations of their school and special Celebrations.

In the second year, they will have opportunity to exchange booklets about themselves, telling how is a day in their lives: when they wake up, their families, houses, how they help, friends and games, routines and food they like. They will exchange traditional lullabies and recipes. They will create a bulletin board to display other children´s works and use a big Venn diagram to analyze similarities and differences between children around Europe.

To ensure the project works successfully partners teachers will share ideas and come together with common decisions. We must feel motivated and involved to work in harmony. Problems and obstacles during each phase must be identified and reported in order to correct actions. The coordinator will facilitate fluid communication.
Decisions must be taken jointly.

Partners

Wake up! Europe partners come from :

 -United Kingdom

- Romania

- Greece

- Poland

- Italy

- Portugal

- Spain

We will all learn about differences and similarities we have, as the first step to promote understanding, respect and tolerance and to stablish sustainable partnership for the future.
It engages a minimum of 20 children aged 7-11 in each partner school, all of them from quite different cultural background.
We pretend that all students around the school benefit directly or indirectly during the project from lessons led by the partners and other teachers involved in the project, as we seek for a Comenius integrated in the day -a -day methodology and organization of the learning activities.
Teachers who will implement the project in their schools also come from a variety of backgrounds including Literacy,Foreign Languages, Art, Geography and ICT.

Our motivation

Education is a lifelong process which can be defined as the transmission of values, beliefs, habits and acumulated knowledge of a society. The challenge of education is to grant young people with the necessary tools to become responsable, thoughtful and enterprising citizens. Education is, thus, a mean to foster the individual and society´s future development and prosperity.
Europe is made up of many countries with different culture and peculiarities. Our lack of knnowledge about some of them has lead us to include the study of Europe in our formal curriculum. We consider that the best way of learning its realities, peculiarities and idiosincrycy and experience the sense of belonging is to open a channel of communication among them.We believe the partnership within WAKE UP EUROPE will help all participants perceive themselves as citizens of Europe who share European values and contribute to the development of mutual understanding and cooperation. We are sure that the cooperation among schools will bring a stronger awareness of being citizens of Europe.

This project means opportunity to ours schools to jointly explore issues of European concern, to celebrate diversity, to build new community participation in the day-to-day learning and enhance teaching experiences. It means an exciting way of bringing a global dimension into the lives of our young pupils at the same time that enhancing the European dimension in our schools curriculum by providing training and professional development to teachers and schools
Since everyone faces different modes and ways of running a project, the globalization, integration and mobility within a Comenius project will derive in a convergence of cultural practices where diversity is highly estimated. For teachers living and working in different countries the project offers a precious opportunity to reduce cultural isolation through contact and cooperation with other teachers from other corners of Europe. It also invites us to reflect on own practice and integrate other methods and views. For both, pupils and teachers , immersing into foreign cultural frameworks and create a common piece of work with different nationalities partners is an additional attraction.

Taking part in searching for information about the countries involved in the project and easy debates rises awareness of young kids on European development issues and equip them with skills and knowledges to become active European citizens. We appreciate the fact that children will have a chance to get motivated to cooperate, do things together, and make new friends at the same time that develop research abilities and understand and accept others' cultures.Contact with other countries opens young kid’s eye to the world and increases their self-confidence and enthusiasm for learning, helps them value other cultures and promotes respect and tolerance. The use of the English language to exchange the information and idea gives them chance to use it in a natural way, resulting to an improvement of their communicative competence.
Parents involved will also learn about their own and culture in other countries of Europe

Project description

The children around some schools in Europe will be invited to look inside other children's lives to analyze differences and similarities. Through the CLIL approach they will develop some learning skills: compare, using diagrams and draw conclusions. WAKE UP EUROPE is pretended to be an easy project for young kids, based on their own experience and focus the learning of relevant skills in an easy and fun way. This project invites students to do a presentation in different format( paper, digital...)of their typical day including aspects such as school, home-life and friends. They will then be given the opportunity to explore typical days from students in other countries and examine any similarities and differences. Partner Schools´ works and conclusions will be recorded in a digital format(e-book). This project will be worked with children aged 7 to 11, depending on each school, bearing in mind pupils will play the main role in the development of the project. Although the activities in Pepe Dámaso will be carried out with second and third graders (7/8 years old), all pupils at school will be involved in the project by working activities adapted at their levels within a general year planning that will take a trip around the world as central topic. Through clear and easy activities we aim to promote curiosity, exploration, knowledge and reflection of cultures involved in the partnership and provide interaction with other children in ways that facilitate the development of expressive language and thought. The planned activity of recording a video at home will facilitate collaborative work with families. Children with special needs will be able to follow the project by substituting written language by pictures and oral presentation.
